Essex Double Tilt-Out Shoe Bench is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this bench! So hard to find this style. It is perfect at the end of our bed. It is sturdy, and my husband said not hard to put together. I would highly recommend it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Missing a factory installed piece I bought this Two weeks ago. We checked the parts list and proceeded to assemble the bench. Over half way through assembly we discovered a factory installed, threaded brass piece necessary to screw in the cam bolts, was missing in part H. I immediately contacted Improvements and I am still waiting for the Parts Dept. to contact me. I hope they are able to send a replacement part. Meanwhile the bench sits, partially assembled, in my dining room.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Deceptively poor quality, would not recommend. I will never order "assembly required" furniture again. It's always code for "cheap, poor quality." This arrived in something like 30 pieces, plus scores of screws and bolts and nonsense, and would have taken at least 2 hours to assemble by myself even without complications. But of course one piece was damaged out of the box. This thing sat half-assembled in my entry foyer for the better part of two months!!! Improvements sent the replacement piece, damaged again. Then on my second call about this, it was almost two weeks with no word before I called again to find out no one ever put in the order. The third call, the next one arrived damaged again, in the same spot (dented on the corner) and took almost two weeks again. Then the next time they send a random piece from a totally different piece of furniture. I finally just had them send the entire bench all over again and I had to pick out the one piece I needed, and now I still need to deal with scheduling UPS to come and pick up the extra bench. I can't take it to UPS myself because it weighs at least 100 pounds. And just to rub things in, now that it was FINALLY assembled, I asked a friend to help me put it on its side so I could attach felt pieces to the bottom to protect my hardwood floors. Well, one of the legs just completely ripped off in his hand, at the slightest hint of pressure when he made the mistake of gripping it. I should have warned him how cheaply constructed it was, but even so, it SHOULD NOT have come apart that easily!!! This was not the leg itself that broke, but rather the leg's screw/bolt ripped out a hole in the bottom panel where it was supposed to be attached to the main bench, so the only way to properly fix it would be to completely take apart the whole stupid thing again, switch out the piece (which of course the piece from the spare bench was no good with a little gouge already in it, so would have to get it resent yet again), and spend another hour or two on it. I decided to try my luck with some metal/wood adhesive I happened to have instead. Fingers crossed it stays on, because at least when it's back on the leg hides the visible damage. Lastly, even without all the assembly issues, I find that even the functionality of this bench is poor. The drawers are clunky and awkward and do not glide out smoothly. It's only a matter of time before some unwitting guest bangs them on the bottom of the bench hard enough that they end up chipping it.I imagine it will have chips and scratches all over the bottom within a year or so from the drawers. I don't understand why they couldn't put in proper gliders for the drawers and/or just designed them to pull out straight, rather than at an angle. Unfortunately what looks like a beautiful bench at a first glance is really just a piece of junk. What a shame. Side Note: even the matching cushion you can buy for it was disappointing. Mine arrived overstuffed on one side and I'm still waiting for the exchange on it to arrive...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Arrived as damaged - with scratches - Too hard to put together - definitely need 2 people, not because of weight, but because of the complicated assembly technique - Use of brackets and proper screws instead of cam nuts would have helped the durability and strength

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great Bench But Love this bench but was difficult to put together.. The back of the actual shoe storage area was not cut correctly. Had I not had professional carpenters putting it together there would have been a problem. They had a saw set up which they had to use to cut the back to fit properly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nice unit, poor construction and tolerances Received first unit via UPS ground who dragged it up driveway to door damaging ends in box (150 lb box). First unit picked back up and second unit delivered promptly to business address to minimize potential for damage. Upon attempting to assemble unit their was again damage to a few pieces albeit minor enough to work around. During assembly we determined that several pieces were not aligned properly where connecting. This could certainly be worked around and modified to work if desired but at this point we decided we were done expending additional effort with this unit and returned it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A tough one to assemble It is a very nice storage cabinet when assembled, But assembly is a nightmare, holes do not line up,Cams are very brittle, break easily. I had to use glue and screws to put the thing together. You need three people and brandy to put this thing together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Be Prepared for Assembly The shoe bench is beautiful and made from quality wood. It holds as many shoes as the picture shows. The giant heavy box arrives with the bench unassembled--and it's a little tricky to remember as you are putting it together which side is the bottom, which the top, etc. Follow the excellent directions carefully!
