Whether you live in an apartment, condo, townhome, or single family home, having an outdoor living space is a dream come true. It’s an extension of your home that makes summer days and nights more enjoyable and serves as your own private oasis. Below are the elements that you may include. But again, consider the size of your space.

Elements of an Outdoor Living Space

Rugs, privacy screen, eucalyptus furniture, Wildfire rechargeable lanterns, Casablanca solar lanterns, pillows, meditating frog statue, Baja patio furniture, and fire pit.

Patio Furniture

Patio furniture comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and types. For instance, you may prefer wood because it’s warm and inviting and sturdy. On the other hand, you may like wicker or metal furniture. It really is a matter of preference. Once you know the style of outdoor furniture you want, consider your space. Smaller spaces will do well with a table, chairs, and coffee table. If you have a larger space, consider a collection consisting of a table, chairs, coffee table, sofa, ottoman and more. Finally, consider adding a patio umbrella because it provides shade from the sun.

Outdoor Rug

Nothing warms up an outdoor space like an area rug. They come in a wide variety of colors, styles, and patterns and will accent your space beautifully and can be used either outdoors or indoors. Outdoor rugs are made from bamboo, hemp, jute, polypropylene, polyester, seagrass, and more. Most are mold- and mildew-resistant and some are treated so that they’re fade-resistant. Outdoor rugs are easy to clean, just hose them off or spot clean.

Curtains and Privacy Screens

You may want to create a little privacy in your backyard, especially if you’re entertaining guests. Outdoor curtains are either grommet or tab-top, but they both come in many colors and styles and have to be used with an outdoor curtain rod with posts. Alternatively, you may want to use privacy screens. If you want a natural feel, use a faux ivy trellis. Of course, you may prefer to use wicker, wood, or resin. These come in either a 4-panel or single panel. You may even get privacy screen extenders so that you can extend the length to cover more area for even more privacy on your deck or patio.

Cushions and Pillows

You can’t have outdoor living space without cushions and pillows, especially since they accent patio furniture. Choose bold colors and patterns or muted tones. Of course, you could mix and match for a unique look. Keep in mind that outdoor cushions come in different sizes. Our blog post, How To Measure Outdoor Furniture for Patio Cushions, shows you how to measure your patio furniture so that you get the right size cushions.

Wall Décor

Wall décor can jazz up your outdoor living space. First, consider the overall look of your outdoor living space. If you have a beach theme, you may want to add a metal sunface. If you have a nautical theme, consider adding a vintage metal compass. Of course, if you’re trying to coordinate a color scheme, look for pieces in colors that complement the main color. For light blue, you could compliment it with white, grey, and light peach or tan.

Garden Décor

Adding a water fountain can create a peaceful setting. Or perhaps you’d like to add a few sculptures or statues. If you have a larger space, consider adding garden bridges and walkways. Like birds? Add a bird feeder or two along with a bird bath. Just imagine watching the birds in the morning or afternoon while you drink coffee or tea. It may put you in a zen-like state.

Warm up your outdoor living space with a firepit. They come in gas or wood burning and different sizes and shapes. However, you’ll want to make sure small children do not touch the firepit while it’s burning. Please practice fire safety! Not only can a firepit keep you and your guests warm, but it will add ambiance to your space. If you get one that’s wood burning, you could roast marshmallows.

Lastly, you’ll want to add lighting to your outdoor space. If your space is small, consider adding a few lanterns or even a table or floor lamp. If you have a tree, you could hang solar lights from the branches or string patio lights. For a larger space, you could add this and more, including pathway lights.
