It’s a big job but someone’s got to do it. Keeping the kids safe, that is. Every summer there are thousands of children who sustain injuries that require emergency room visits. By learning some summer safety tips for kids, you can help keep your own children out of the emergency room and out where they belong…having fun! Here are some summer safety tips that can help you do just that.

Summer Safety Tip #1: Don’t Be Bugged

There are all sorts of outdoor bugs that children have to deal with. Bees, mosquitoes, chiggers, ticks, and other insects seem to just know where to find your kids. While bugs can be bothersome and sometimes dangerous, it’s also sometimes harmful to use certain insect repellents. Don’t use insect repellents with more than 30% of concentrated DEET on children, and never apply it on their hands or faces. If a bug does decide to take advantage of a sweet opportunity, you should be prepared. Read up on different types of insect bites and how to treat them. You don’t want to leave your children in distress while you scramble to figure out what to do.

Summer Safety Tip #2: Jump in the Lake

…But not until you have your life jacket on. Every state has certain regulations regarding life jackets and if your kids are going to spend time around the water, you should take every precaution. At the lake, be sure you can see your children at all times and that they wear their life jackets. At the pool, watch your children and be sure they don’t run – they could easily slip on the wet pavement and get injured. No matter how good of a swimmer your child is, you should never leave your child unattended around water. Children can drown in even an inch of water, so be sure you or someone you trust is always supervising their water activities. Swim at pools where there is a lifeguard on duty, but realize that your children are ultimately your responsibility. Set aside some time at the beginning of every summer to get re-certified in CPR training. It only takes a couple of hours and you can usually find classes at your local community center.

Summer Safety Tip #3: Play It Safe

When you head to the playground, you probably expect that it will be a safe place for your kids. Before you let them go play, check the playground equipment for broken parts and the surrounding areas for anything hazardous that someone could have left behind. If you find some broken equipment at your local park, take some action and report it. Find your community blog or social network site and find out who is in charge of the local park or playground. If it’s not listed on the site, ask! Someone will know who it is. Check the temperature of the playground equipment, and make sure that ropes and chains are completely secure at each end. It’s also a good idea to pack a light lunch or some snacks and cold drinks – just be sure and pack a little extra in case your child makes a friend or two.

Summer Safety Tip #4: Stay Cool

Children can heat up extremely fast so be sure you have plenty of water on hand. More than likely, your kids will not come to you for water, so you’ll need to go to them. It’s recommended that children should drink about 5-oz. of water every 20 minutes when they’re playing out in the sun. If you notice that your children are flushed from the heat, bring them inside to sit and cool down or find a shady tree to relax under. You can also take a portable mister or portable fan with you if you’re kids are running around away from the house.

Summer Safety Tip #5: Cover Up

Since your kids are going to be spending the majority of their time outdoors, you should cover them up with the proper sunscreen. Apply your child’s sunscreen 15-20 minutes before they go out into the sun and make sure the sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB rays and is waterproof. Re-apply the sunscreen about every 2 hours and if your kids are going to be playing in the water, you’ll want to re-apply the sunscreen when they’re done. Even though your kids will be covered in sunscreen, you should still put light, loose clothes on them and try and get them to shade their face with a hat.

Take some time at the beginning of each summer season to review all of the summer safety tips. Other safety tips for kids include recognizing poison ivy and other dangerous plants and teach your kids to be alert while on the road whether driving, biking, or walking.
