Outdoor Curtain Rod with 2 Posts-Antique Bronze 3.8 5 4 4
Great product I spent a lot of time searching for a product to block the afternoon sun when it drops below my patio umbrella and shines directly on the deck. This product works great. I've used string to attach them to my deck railings so they don't blow over. We now use our deck more because of this product. August 4, 2013
Great product! We bought two rods for the pergola on our patio last summer. After a full season of weather and use, they still look perfect. We took them inside for the winter and reinstalled them last weekend and they look like brand new! Will be purchasing two more rods for use on our front porch today! April 23, 2014
Requires some mechanical creativity In a cool partly cloudy static environment (i.e., no gravity or wind) this product would work perfectly. However, wind blows the curtains which pulls the barely weighted poles over and gravity does the rest. Note: trying to pick-up sun heated metal poles and reassemble them is not advisable without thick gloves. I have several sets of these outdoor curtain rods and poles rigged such that I only use one base plate per pole and several disguised plastic ties to hold them to the deck railing/posts. Colorado gets some nasty wind gusts and so far (4mo) my contraption has remained in place providing much needed shade from the sun. This saved me thousands of dollars when compared to having a custom sun screen designed and fabricated. I think it looks great too. October 16, 2014
Big Disappointment! First I'd like to make it clear that my unfavorable review in no way is a reflection of Improvements as a company or their customer service, both of which are great. I have been ordering merchandise from Improvements for years, and have always been satisfied...until this particular product. When I first saw this outdoor curtain rod set in the Improvements catalog, I thought it was finally an answer to the dilemma I've had with keeping my patio's west side shaded. We have a retractable awning with a front-piece attachment, which does a great job of keeping the overhead sun off the patio; however, as the sun moves west during the afternoon, we get a great deal of sun coming onto the patio from the side. I debated about ordering the curtain rod set only b/c I thought the price was kind of steep, but I finally gave in and ordered it. It's one of those products which is a great idea, but poorly carried out. The bases supporting the upright poles are way too light and flimsy for the height of these poles. I did not use these on a really windy day, but as soon as a little summer breeze kicked up, the poles went toppling over. I tried to weigh the bases down, which seemed to help somewhat, until a couple of days later when I went inside for about an hour, and when I came out, both poles had snapped off where they're welded on the bottom to the piece that screws into the base! Again, this was not a really windy day or during a storm; it was breezy, but my awning was fine and I was shocked that such a light breeze would break these curtain poles! I called Improvements and explained the problem. They offered to send a new set, but I declined as I figured I'd only have the same result, so they refunded my money without a problem, assuring me that customer satisfaction was their first concern, which I really appreciate. I will definitely deal with them again, but I am very disappointed in this product, which could be improved by having the upright pole base be much heavier and sturdier, perhaps like a patio umbrella base. Perhaps some sort of staking of the poles should be recommended, or even supplied with the rod set. And yes, outdoor curtains do blow around in the breeze, but that can be remedied with a strip of velcro or a few clothespins along the sides where the curtain panels meet, which is not a big deal. I wanted to write this review to warn anyone who lives where there is the least amount of breeze in the summer (which I suppose is anywhere but on the surface of the moon) that you might encounter the same problem that I did. If you live in a very windy area, you probably should give this outdoor curtain rod set a pass, unless you are prepared to use a different base or stake them somehow into the ground -- which would be difficult if you're using them on a hard surface like a patio. Can you attached posts to patio ?

Is there a way to attach the posts to the patio so that the wind/rain/storms don't blow it over?

Answer:
I wondered this also, and have some nylon cable ties 50lb weight zip wire ties that I plan to use to zip tie the posts to my patio rails. They come in all colors and lengths and I've used them before as anchors and they work great. Also at the end of the season they can be cut off without hurting the posts and or rails.

You can find them at Amazon. Hope that helps.

Answer:
See my review and the comment that someone added to it. My experience is that it will not withstand more than the slightest breeze, and mine was on a patio, with a fence not far away on both sides, so it was "partally enclosed," and still kept toppling over.

Thank you for your question.
The product is made of metal and has a cross metal base. If heavier outdoor curtains are on the rods it should be able to withstand mild winds. Improvements recommends that if there are strong or high winds that you move them to a partially enclosed or covered patio or outdoor living space.

I would like to use this in a space of about 8 feet by 5 feet. Is it possible to cut the rod down with a saw of some sort?

Thanks

Improvements recommends that the rod not be cut. The rods are tooled so that the extended rods and end caps fit properly. Improvements cannot be responsible for any changes made on the product by the consumer after purchase.
