Stafford Reversible Tansu Step Chest 4.6 5 85 85
Pretty good could be better I am very particular and some of the corners were smushed and can be seen when assembled despite the enormous amount of packaging. There are parts of the instructions that are out of sequence which if I didn't look at them closely and figure it out I would've put the securing brackets on first which it tells you before putting the backing on and would've had to take them off and then put them back on after the backing. It looks nice but I know the imperfect corners are there. May 3, 2013
Could not be happier! I have been in love with tansu cabinets ever since visiting Japan a decade ago, and when it came time to refresh my living space, I began looking for affordable tansu options. Finding this unit on Improvements was such a pleasnt surprise, and the price was unbeatable. I put the unit together myself, and found the instructions very easy to follow. I placed it next to the narrow Stafford cabinet beneath my steep stairs to the second floor, and they look like a complete unit. The only reason I gave the quality rating 4 stars instead of 5 is that because the unit is wood and wood veneer, care must be taken when assembling to not overtight screws or damage the finish. Other than that, the unit is handsome, sturdy, and everyone who has seen it has been completely impressed. April 17, 2013
Really like how this looks in our entryway I've had my eye on this cabinet for about 2 years. Thank goodness that Improvements Catalog kept it in their catalog for that long! I finally purchased it and assembled it the other day. The instructions were very good and clearly written. I assembled it by myself in a couple of hours. Before, we'd had a pretty ugly wooden box in the entryway that held my daughter's DVD collection. Now we have this MUCH more stylish cabinet to greet our visitors when they come to the house. REALLY like it! April 14, 2013
not worth the price... not what I expected..took 2 people and about 2 hrs to assemble.. like the look but would not. buy again...too much work to take apart and return... March 26, 2013

Answer:
The back is a thin panel (color coordinated) that you nail on. Otherwise, finsihed on all sides, inside and out.

Answer:
No, the back is cardboard that you tack with tiny nails to the edged of the piece, like the bookcases sold other places. It didn't matter to us because it's completely hidden against the wall.

Answer:
No, the backside is particleboard with a nice finish on one side that makes the back "wall" of the cabinet. You would need to have two cabinets back to back to make all sides finished. Or, I suppose if you didn't care about the inside of the cabinet having a finished look, during assembly you could turn the particleboard around so that the finished side faces out.

We want to use this as a room divider, between an office and sitting area. Our desk height is 30", and it will be behind the cabinet. We want to make sure it is at or below the top of the sliding cabinet.

Thanks!

Answer:
Well, the sliding cabinet is actually the 2nd tier and it is exactly
29 3/4 inches from the floor.
The 3rd tier, which is a single box with a door measures
38 3/4 inches from the floor.
Hope that helps!

Answer:
Under the Specifications tab it is listed as the 4th tier drawer instead of the 3rd tier. Read from there and you will see that the entire 4th tier is covered, leaving the 4th tier drawer above that as the only option. It says it is 6 inches high. Hope this helps.

Answer:
Not really shelves - each "box" is like a shelf on its own.
there is a total of 7 separate compartments -
2 drawered, 3 open door, and 2 sliding door.

Can cubes be rearranged?

I would like to be able to display a couple of sculptures on this but the individual open spaces are too small. If I move the topmost cube down to sit on the bottom tier, beside the sliding doors and cube already there, will it fit? I've looked at the measurements in the specs but suspect those are internal measurements as they don't add up to the overall total. I'm concerned if Imove the top cube down it will overlap the bottom tier. Will it work?

Answer:
If you move the top tier to either the next tier down, or the far right side of the bottom tier it will overhang by about an inch. However, if you put the top tier on top of the box that is the same size as the top tier, it will match up with out any overhang and it will be flush with the top of the big cabinet with the slider doors( I measured to be sure). I should clarify that I set mine up with the steps ascending right to left. I don't think that it makes a difference either way, but, there you go.

Answer:
No, it will not work. The space on the bottom tier is too narrow. It WOULD fit on the next tier up, but I would probably just leave the top off at that point and retain the remaining steps.

Answer:
I do not think that these are meant to be stairs. All of the boxes are independent of each other and are only attached with small metal brackets on the back. I would not feel comfortable even standing on it.
