The Bug Catcher Vacuum looks likes it could do the job but it just barely does it for me and I am catching little 1/4" long, tiny moth-like insects that hatch out of our bird's pet food then land on our low-profile popcorn ceiling to reproduce and create more of them. I had been sucking them into a Dirt Devil hand vac and spraying raid in the bottom to let the fumes kill those caught in the filter when I put it in the recharging base but when I would empty it out into a plastic bag some would still be alive. When the Dirt Devil died I liked the idea of zapping the bugs and not having to deal with the Raid. A plus for this is that it has a 24" reach (or about that it think) and I stand on a 3-step unfolding step stool and with this can reach way more of my vaulted ceiling than ever before. Very nice. But the bad thing is when I get a bug trapped under the inverted saucer around the suction opening it is seldom strong enough to cause the bug to lose it's grip and be sucked in. Now , that saucer has three slots I guess to keep the motor from working too hard on a flat surface but with my popcorn ceiling I do not have that problem so used adhesive tape to fill in the slots in an attempt to create more suction but it's still too weak to suck them right off the ceiling. I have to slide the 4" +-suction cup head over so the edge will irritate the moth and cause it to want to fly and then it will be sucked in. But this is not easy. In dragging the edge of the suction cup head over to touch the bug to get it to let go I have to be very careful or it will fly out from under the head and I have to start again. Very tedious, but I learned. I also put a cap to act as a plug in the saucer/tube opening to keep bugs that didn't get zapped from getting back out. And keep in mind, they are TINY: 1/4" skinny moths. Don't know how this could work on bigger insects especially low mass spiders, but then again maybe an insect with more mass could be sucked in more easily. Don't know. Don't have bigger insects to try this on, but I think a bigger body might offer more to pull on and it might be better..
But having said all that, within 3 or 4 days I had reduced a population of maybe 50 or more tiny irritating flying moths down to next to nothing so it worked well with my adjustments. Much better than the Dirt Devil. And I think they must have been escaping even with the raid because this has been an ongoing battle for three years plus and 3 to 4 days with the BUg Catcher Vacuum and their population was markedly reduced and now close to wiped out. At first I didn't think the zapper was working and I would be sure to follow instructions and leave it running 15 sec. after the last sucked moth but then I would see them climbing on the sides of the tube and when I would turn it back on I'd see a flutter of moth activity just above the electric coil so didn't think it was working, But after the 3 or 4 days, when I finally emptied it into a plastic I saw 50+ dead moths in the bag - so it had worked just fine for my needs.

This product does not work well for wasps. It would work great for small bugs like spiders etc. There was not enough suction to get a wasp off the wall and that was the main reason I ordered it, because wasps come in around our fireplace.

I have a problem with silverfish in my apartment. They are coming in from the attic. Maintnence is going to bomb the attic. While I was waiting I purchased this bug catcher vacum. It works great! These silverfish (GROSS!!) were mostly on the ceilings and the walls. Before I purchased the bug catcher vacum, I would scramble to find something to smash the silverfish with. It would always leave an ugly mark on the wall that looked like snot. With bug catcher vacum, I aim, watch the silverfish get suck in. I can hear them being zapped. I only had trouble getting one very fat, large silverfish to go in. I don't think the vacum was powerful enough. A great buy, works excellent. I am very happy I purchased it. I thought it might be a cheap toy, but this bug catcher is the real thing.
