We had put so many items together while furnishing our new cabin, that it was such a relief to just pull these bookcases out of their boxes, open them up and stack them. (Our old cabin burned during the wildfires in northern TX in April, 2011.) They are a beautiful addition to our living space.

Wonderful piece
I love that there was no assembly to this bookshelf. It is very sturdy, I have books and DVDs on mine. I have bought three of these. It is very nice looking in my living room and kitchen. No Knicks or chips out of it when it arrived. I highly recommend this shelf.

A good product
This shelving, which easily unfolds, saved me from drilling holes into the wallboard; a great idea.

It's not very sturdy
I put my college text books on it and am afraid it's going to collapse. It's not very sturdy and clearly not designed to hold books, despite the three shelves and it being wide. It wobbles side to side

I am considering purchasing 2 of these in order to store books, toys, bins, etc. Wondering about the sturdiness of the product when potentially used for this purpose -- the kids have a lot of book and small bins. Thanks!

The shelves are very solid and sturdy, and should hold whatever you want to put on them. They have a good solid base and seem unlikely to tip over. However, they are quite shallow -- I think about 11" -- so you should compare their depth with the items you want to put on them before purchasing.Age: Over 65

I would not use this for a child. The shelves are not very stable and I think it would topple over if much force was placed on the front of the shelves. I would only use it around children if you can secure it to the wall.Age: 45-54

Yes it is very sturdy and good-looking - although the back is open, there is a slat to keep things from falling out - one is used for heavy music scores and the other one (with the optionbal top) holds books, CDs and a small sound system on top10 months ago

The bookshelves have pegs you insert into holes on the top in order to stack them. If you add a mantel, it is also held on by those pegs and is smooth on the top, so you can only stack the bookcases or use a mantel, but not both.Age: Over 65

Mantle is optional and only needed for top piece - you can leave open if you prefer. The shelf does not come with a top so if you are using them individually, you may want to get the mantle for each one. If you use a mantel, you cannot then tier another shelf on top of it.Age: 45-54

I have a kitchen with 5 doors and 2 windows and because of that there is no space for cabinets. But I have an empty wall where shelves would fit if they are 12" deep or less. I have been looking for a very long time for shelves narrow enough to fit there. These would fit perfectly, but are they sturdy enough to be stacked?
I do not have children and I would put heavy items on the bottom shelves and light pots and pants on top. Eventually I may ask a carpenter to fix them to the wall. One of the pictures is a kitchen setup and looks very good.

I'd like to paint over it and make it a custom shade, but I don't want to risk it peeling off. So, if you could tell me what the top coat paint/finish is made of I'd appreciate it. If you think another model would be better suited to painting over, let me know. I'm going for an antique white final look, so I figured the white acts as my base coat. Thank you!
